Running in the Rain!

So we all know that Vancouver gets a lot of rain.  Like, A LOT of rain.  Which is why I call it “Raincouver”.  But, hey its better then snow right?!  All this rain makes it hard for us runners to wanna get outside for a run.  But wearing the right gear, can make it a lot easier and more comfortable.

Now even though it rains quite often, its not usually cold….just wet.  This past week it has rained EVERY day, but it has been about 8 or 9 degrees, which is pretty mild.  This means that you don’t need to wear more then 2 layers on the top, and one on the bottom.  But lets start from the top and work to the bottom!

Head- A good, water-resistant hat is key!  Keeping water off your face, makes you feel like you aren’t running in the rain as much.  Also the drier you keep your head, the warmer you will stay.  So invest in a good running hat!  It’s worth it.

Upper body-  a snug fitting, technical long sleeve shirt should be the bottom layer.  If its too loose it will get soaked and heavy.  Just like wearing a cotton shirt.  Cotton is a big NO NO when running in the rain (or really running at all!).  Stick with the technical running shirts.

For the second layer you want it to be some sort of a light weight water-resistant jacket or vest.  I usually go with a vest, as I get too hot with a jacket on.

Hands- A good pair of technical material gloves will keep your hands warm.

Legs- Stay away from baggy pants.  Technical fitting tights are ideal.  I am usually fine with ¾ length tights, but you may be more comfortable in full length tights.  Water-resistant track pants are good for guys.  Girls should be good with tights.

Feet- Well your feet are gonna get wet regardless of whatever shoe you have on!  Avoid cotton socks and splash on!

Investing in proper running gear is essential if you want to have an enjoyable run in the rain.  Hit up Lady Sport or Forerunners on West 4th to stock up on some awesome new running attire!  Asics has an awesome “wind-stopper” water-resistant vest that I can’t live without.

Happy running!
