Mixing it Up!

Well the nice weather is finally here!  This means it’s time to get outside and enjoy it.  When it’s sunny and warm in Vancouver, there is nowhere else in the world I would rather be.  And it never seems to get too hot here.  This last month it seemed to be the perfect “running” temperature almost every day- somewhere around 20C at some point during the day.  Now, as a runner, I am outside doing my sport every day, no matter what the weather is.  So for me, my workout routine stays pretty much the same year round, when it comes to running.  But, for most people, their workout regime is usually inside, in a gym. It’s time to mix things up!

Today at Innovative Fitness, we had our session outside at Kits beach! Mark (my training coach), packed some equipment in my car and we did the quick 5 min drive down, and had an amazing workout right by the water.  It was awesome and so refreshing to do something different.  Changing up the workout environment can help to keep your workouts fresh and exciting. Plus you get a tan while you’re out there working up a sweat 🙂 Ask your trainer to help you create a workout you can do outside with very little equipment that you can do on your own.

For those of you who do the majority of your cardio at the gym on the elliptical, treadmill, bike, rower or swimming- it’s time to get outside!  Take your bike, or rent/borrow one and go bike for an hour around the seawall.  For you swimmers out there, you have to start swimming at kits beach pool!  It’s 137m long!  Have a fun day with friends and rent kayaks.  You can make it into a workout if you have some sort of race out on the water.  And for those of you running inside on the treadmill- what the heck are you doing still running inside?!  Get outside and enjoy our beautiful city!  There are so many amazing places to run in Vancouver!

Other ways to get outside and stay active are by joining a team of sorts.  With the summer coming up, beach volleyball is in full effect in Vancouver.  So is softball.  I would suggest volleyball before softball as it is a much better workout.

Ok so there are no excuses for staying inside to get your workout done.  Now go outside and enjoy the sunshine while you are getting fit!
