When was the last time you touched your toes? Or sat cross-legged comfortably?
Mobility is one of the key factors that contributes to our quality of life as we age. Mobility is not just flexibility; it is our ability to move through a range of motion with strength and control. As we age, maintaining our ability to move freely and independently becomes increasingly important. Movements we often take for granted, such as walking, getting up from a chair, reaching overhead, and climbing stairs, can become more challenging over time. The earlier we prioritize our mobility, the better equipped we may be to maintain our functional fitness and enjoy a high quality of life.
The idea that our mobility and flexibility will inevitably worsen with age is a misconception. While changes in tissue stiffness can occur as we get older, research shows that regular stretching can improve flexibility and mobility in adults of all ages. Why does this matter? Increasing flexibility is about much more than performing a particular stretch or reaching a certain position. Improving our range of motion allows our bodies to move more freely and participate in a wider variety of activities. Research also suggests that stretching programs can improve not only flexibility, but physical function in older adults. A 2025 systematic review of 29 studies found that adults who participated in stretching programs experienced significant improvements in walking ability and walking speed. Furthermore, a 2020 systematic review found that stretching programs improved walking-related measures, balance, and overall physical function.
While mobility and stretching are not replacements for strength training, which is important for building and maintaining strong bones and muscles, they are essential components of overall physical fitness. Consider what your day looks like: kneeling down to weed the garden, reaching up to the top shelf for a rarely used pantry item, or climbing in and out of the front seat of your car. All of these activities require mobility through the hips, shoulders, and ankles. Without maintaining joint mobility, there may come a time when moving confidently into these positions becomes more difficult, requires assistance, or increases your risk of injury. Having an adequate range of motion allows your body to move more comfortably and confidently through everyday activities.
Mobility is also essential for continuing to do the activities you love. Whether it is playing golf or pickleball, hiking a mountain, travelling the world, gardening, or getting down on the floor to play with your grandchildren, these activities require a combination of balance, coordination, strength, and sufficient range of motion. Regular stretching and mobility work can help you maintain the range of motion needed to keep doing the things you enjoy. It is never too early to work on increasing and maintaining the mobility you want to keep for the activities that are important to you.
