Fear of Working Out. Part 2

working out

Coach Lydia-Rose asked 14 of her girlfriends what were the top reasons why they didn’t like going to the gym and rounded up 4 most common ones. In part 1 of this blog series we addressed the myths about bulking up and what to do when you don’t know what to do in the gym.

FEAR #3 I don’t want people looking at me while I work out.

Many gyms have several rooms where you can bring equipment in and exercise. They are usually a stretch/core room filled with exercise balls, mats and smaller weights. If you are nervous about being by the squat racks or the lifting floor, simply grab a few med balls and head into the other room for just as challenging a workout!

Use the women’s only section! Many gyms also have a women’s only section for those ladies who are still feeling a little shy. They will always be equipped with a few cardio machines and some weights. On that note, get off the cardio machine and go pick up some weights! We women use cardio as our fall back if we don’t know a certain exercise. Go ask for help! You won’t regret incorporating weight training along with your usual cardio regime, I promise.

FEAR #4 I don’t want to run into anyone I know while I’m sweating like a pig.

Who says that the gym is the only place to work out? Go outside for a run or a hike. You can buy some weights and bands for cheap from any fitness store, and if you’re up for it, you can even buy yourself a TRX to bring with you anywhere you want. You’ll be able to relocate your gym to stay as from away from people as you want (if that’s what you want!). Remember, everyone at the gym is sweating just as much, if not more, than you. And if they aren’t, well then…

Being sweaty at the gym is nothing to be ashamed of. It’s simply the body’s way of cooling itself down when it gets overheated.

A lot of people will notice you for that and you may even inspire them to continue with their workouts and to set themselves further goals. Also, pride yourself on having made it out to the gym. This is your time, not anyone else’s. Work hard, sweat hard, and you’ll reap the rewards.

We are all exercising with the same goal, and that is to be the best person that we can be at that time.
Whether that is trying to deadlift 400lbs, or training for a 5 KM run, or even just stepping into a gym for the first time, we are all trying to achieve a better self than we are now, and man or woman, we should be proud of each other for having stepped out of a comfort zone to strive for something great. So let’s change that FOWO (Fear Of Working Out) and turn it into FOMAW (Fear Of Missing A Workout)!
