Have you ever wanted to shoot a bow and arrow like some your favourite TV and movie characters? Do you ever have dreams where you are Legolas saving Middle-Earth, Katniss Everdeen surviving through the Hunger Games, or even Hawkeye saving the world?
Well, in February a group of coaches, members and friends went out to 6Pack Indoor Beach to play Archery Tag, and got to live out those very dreams! Archery Tag is a mix between paintball and dodgeball, using foam tipped arrows, so no serious physical injuries are incurred – just the emotional injury of being shot at by your coach.
At 6Pack, it is played on a sand court divided into two with one team on each side. Starting out with a quick safety rundown and lesson on how to shoot the bow, our archers were given the opportunity to practice… by using our Club Manager Sam and Coach Sean as targets! They were good sports about it, and luckily, since everyone was a beginner, not many shots actually hit, but it gave everyone a good chance to get a feel for the bow.
Next, after being split into two well matched teams, we started off with a few elimination games – if you get hit, you’re out, but if your team hits small targets on the other team’s side, you’re back in! Next, to up the stakes a bit, a best of three challenge was introduced – first team to win two games gets to be a firing squad at the other team for 40 seconds!
Both teams started developing strategies, and everyone began upping their game. It came down to the third game to decide who won the challenge, and after a good battle Sam found herself and the rest of her team being used as target practice once again! The last few games were very similar to “Doctor Dodgeball”, where one player on each side is given a shield and is the “doctor”. As the doctor they can revive downed players, but if they get hit, no more reviving and their team is on their own. Choosing the smallest teammate as doctor proved to be the best strategy – less area to get hit! After these last few matches, everyone was pretty exhausted.
Running around on sand with a mask on for an hour proved to be quite a good workout – so everyone grabbed a refreshment, cooled down, and de-sanded themselves before calling it a day. It was a great way to have fun, learn a new skill, and get some exercise. Interested in doing something fun outside of the gym? Ask one of your coaches what upcoming events they’re leading, and join them!
