What to Expect in your First Personal Training Session

If you’ve never been to a  training session before, getting started can be intimidating and overwhelming. Our coaches are trained to help guide you through your first experiences, making your first personal training session a comfortable, exciting process.

If you’ve tried personal training before but are new to Innovative Fitness, we’ll show you how personal training at Innovative Fitness is different. We hire coaches based not only on experience, but on personality. This ensures that we will match you with coaches that are best equipped to help you achieve your goals and motivate you. At Innovative Fitness, we succeed when you succeed! 

We believe it is important that we work hard together as new members and coaches, so that we build a solid foundation to work up from! Read on to learn about what we do as coaches, and what you should be doing as members, to ensure success in the beginning stages of our training. From our initial consults to our sessions on the floor, we believe in using plenty of tools to ensure our success together! This is just the beginning.

CONSULT

First things first: we have our Consult session. No need to bring any special clothing – we’re just going to have a conversation about why we are here, what drove us to come train, what we want to achieve, and how we can work together to get there. I say we because this is truly a team effort. If we both give it our all, we can achieve something extraordinary! As a member, we ask that you really reflect on why you came here to try personal training, and be honest with us and yourselves. Whether you want to run a marathon, are recovering from a past injury, are hoping to lose some weight or gain some muscle, or just get back into exercising again because you fell off the wagon, we want to hear it! Honesty and communication are two of the most important parts of getting the most out of your personal training sessions.

From this point onward, we’ll require you to be in comfortable gym clothes. We suggest a good pair of running/exercise shoes, shorts or pants that won’t restrict your movement, and some sort of synthetic shirt – this will help wick sweat away from the body, and won’t absorb sweat.

FUNCTIONAL MOVEMENT SCREEN

Our next session will be a Functional Movement Screen – FMS for short. In this session, we will have you perform different movements that are key to normal function. Using the FMS, we will be able to identify areas in the body that have functional limitations and asymmetries. From there, we will use the information acquired to determine what exercises to include in our programming to help us move more efficiently, reduce stresses on the body, and achieve our training goals! Whether you’re already an athlete, are recovering from an injury, or are completely new to training and exercise, we’ll be able to create programs customized to your body and goals.

FITNESS PROFILING

After the FMS, we will further determine our areas of opportunity with our Fitness Profiling. We recently revamped our profiling metrics across all Innovative Fitness locations to be more scientific, more customized, and consistent across all locations. During our Fitness Profiling we will assess different areas of our morphology, strength, endurance, coordination, agility, and stability. This will provide us a good baseline of where we are today, and will be a great way to mark our progress along the way!

FIRST PERSONAL TRAINING SESSION

Once we have used these tools to determine our starting point, we will be ready to jump into our first full Training Session together! Be sure to get plenty of rest before your first session, and eat a good meal a few hours before in order to get the most out of our sessions together. It’s also important to stay hydrated before, during and after your session.

Using exercises selected based on our needs and goals, we will show you what our workouts are like, guiding you through functional movements and how to use machines and weights so that you’re maximizing your efforts, and minimizing potential injuries. It’s our goal to ensure that you’re getting the most out of your time, and most importantly, that you’re exercising safely! We’re here to push you to your limits – but never beyond.

Personal training won’t be easy. But in order to have something you’ve never had, you must do something you’ve never done. Come do something extraordinary at Innovative Fitness!
